International Women’s Day events are held globally on March 8th each year, dating back as far as 1909. This year’s Brighton event was organised by Parents for Palestine Sussex and hosted by One Church Brighton as a celebration of Palestinian women. It was a prime example of what an inclusive shared community event can look like, with arts, education, food and information stalls, live music, talks and a community Iftar to break fast after the call to prayer (Adhan). Best Foot Music was happy to be involved, with musicians Alaa, Jamal and Nasreen, who played a set of Syrian, Lebanese and Palestinian songs, to a packed hall. (see Fairuz cover above)
After fast had ended and everyone had eaten, the day ended with a Dabke dance session.
A huge thanks to the organisers for inviting us to be involved and creating such a successful community event.
