Thursday 8th May, Community fundraising gig for people affected by the war in Sudan. The Prince Albert, Brighton.

Brighton based Sudanese musician Bashir Al Gamar, plus music students from the Level 4 Professional Diploma in Music at Northbrook College, in collaboration with Bashir and our friends at Refugee Radio

All funds raised from the event will go directly via Bashir and his networks to help those people affected by the conflict in Sudan.

Bashir Al Gamar is a Brighton based Sudanese Songwriter, Poet and Community ActivistHe came to England in 1993, after being imprisoned for his poem ‘Patience on a beach’ and has lived in Brighton ever since.

He is a poet, songwriter and composer, since 1991 he has written and composed more than 40 poems and songs, mainly in Arabic. Most of them are well known in his home country, Sudan. Some of his songs have been recorded by Sudanese National TV and radio. At present he is working on a new collection of poetry called ‘Rhythm and Resonance’. Bashir has taken part in several art exhibitions and poetry readings in the UK, in Cardiff, London, Liverpool and Bristol. He is a well known proponent of the Oud. His poetry and music mainly deal with his homeland, exile, human suffering and love. He writes in either classical Arabic, or in Sudanese local dialect. The words contain many emotions, images and metaphors and are written in a musical rhythmic language.

Large parts of Sudan are badly affected by the war, with many being forced to flee. Bashir now uses his music to help support those people

The Level 4 Professional Diploma in Music students, from Northbrook College are a multi talented group of young people, fully engaged in creating a diverse and exciting music. This is the second gig they have organised as a group, they are keen to support Bashir and his work as well as showcase their talents.
